Great Lakes Baseball is home to a number of renowned professional instructors, including current major and minor league hitting and pitching instructors. Our staff employs their numerous years of professional baseball playing and coaching experience to provide lessons tailored to meet individual player needs.

Ken Howell

Ken Howell

Director of Pitching Instruction

Coach Howell is a graduate of Tuskegee University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1982 where he pitched in the MLB for seven years. After retiring from the MLB he became a pitching coach for various minor and major league teams. Coach Howell is currently the Assistant Pitching Coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Barbaro Garbey

Hitting & Fielding Instructor

Coach Garbey was a member of the 1984 Detroit Tigers and is a former Tigers hitting coach. He was the AA hitting coach for the Chicago Cubs and is now working in the Atlanta Braves Organization.

Trevor Brewster

Trevor Brewster

Owner - Hitting & Pitching Instructor

Coach Brewster attended Colorado State University where he played in NCBA for four years. After college he played on the Northern Colorado Bandits semi-pro team for two years. He returned home to become a member of the Ann Arbor Pioneer coaching staff where he has coached for the last five years and was on the staff for the 2004 State Championship Team.

Jordon Banfield

Jordon Banfield

Owner - Hitting & Pitching Instructor

Coach Banfield brings his experience as a high school and national travel coach to the athletes at Great Lakes Baseball Academy. Prior to coaching, Jordon played for the Ann Arbor Braves, a travel team that won two national titles, and was a member of the Michigan All-State baseball team in 2004. Coach Banfield recently graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in Sport Management. From 2007-2012 Jordon managed the Ann Arbor Travelers, a premier national travel program, taking them from 14U-18U. In five years the team claimed 20 tournament titles, back-to-back Connie Mack World Series berths and produced 19 NCAA Division I signees. Jordon also works for the Texas Rangers as an Associate Scout and is involved with a number of the top camps and showcases in the Midwest. In addition to his team a number of his students have gone on to be drafted and/or earn college baseball scholarships. Coach Banfield was recently named the Assistant Baseball Coach & Recruiting Coordinator for University of Illinios – Spiringfield.

Chris Yates

Chris Yates

Hitting & Pitching Instructor

Coach Yates is a former player for the Houston Astros organization. He specializes in Hitting and Pitching for players of all skill levels. Coach Yates is currently coaching several youth travel teams in the area and believes fundamentals and hard work are keys to becoming a great baseball player.

Nate Recknagel

Nate Recknagel

Hitting & Catching Instructor

Coach Recknagel is a graduate of the University of Michigan where he was a catcher and first baseman. During his time at U of M, he helped the team to 3 Big Ten Championships and 1 NCAA Regional championship. He was also an All-American (2008), Big Ten player of the year (2008), 3 time All-Big Ten Conference player and holds the U of M single season homerun record. In 2008, Coach Recknagel was a 19th round draft pick of the Cleveland Indians and played for 3 years in their minor league system. Last spring, he was an assistant coach for the Lake Orion High School Varsity baseball team. Most recently, he coached a 16 year old team with Top Tier Baseball based in North Chicago.

Alex Newland

Coach Newland was a 3-year varsity starter in High School, played one year at Concordia University, and has helped coach the A2 Travelers as well. He has been teaching at Great Lakes Baseball Academy for 2 years and focuses on teaching the fundamentals of hitting, pitching, and fielding.

Travis Doyle

Travis Doyle joins GLBA this year as a new instructor but is no stranger to teaching. He has been giving instruction for the past four years after he wrapped up his professional playing career. Travis is a Michigan native, who earned a four-year varsity letter winner at Croswell Lexington High School. Then continued on to GRCC, where he was two time league, district, and National NJCAA Champion at Grand Rapids Community College. He was drafted in the 22nd round in 2003 by the Chicago White Sox and then went back to college in 2004 and was a 1st Team All-American, signed with the White Sox after his sophomore year. He concluded his playing days in the Pioneer League for two seasons. Travis enjoys working with all ages and skill types and specializes in pitching and hitting lessons.

Bobby Brosnahan

Bobby Brosnahan

Hitting & Pitching Instructor

Coach Brosnahan is an Ann Arbor native graduating from Pioneer High School where he earned All District, All Region, and All State selections. He attended the University of Michigan where he pitched three seasons for the Wolverines and earned All Big Ten and All Big Ten Tournament team selections in 2010. Following the 2011 season, Brosnahan played summer baseball in the Cape Cod Collegiate Baseball League, the premier summer league for college prospects. At the conclusion of the 2012 season he signed a professional contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. Coach Brosnahan has a great passion for the game of baseball and teaching his students the fundamentals and techniques to make them successful.

Chris Hervey

Chris Hervey

Hitting & Pitching Instructor

This is Coach Hervey's first year with Great Lakes Baseball Academy. Originally from Long Island, NY, he played collegiate baseball as an outfielder at Indiana University from 2006-2009. He was the captain of the 2009 Big Ten Championship team, a member of the 2008 All Big-Ten Tournament team, as well as a three-time academic all Big Ten selection. At the conclusion of the 2009 season he signed as a free agent with the Baltimore Orioles as a pitcher. He pitched for two years in their minor league system. He is now currently an associate scout with the New York Mets. Coach Hervey brings a lot of coaching experience with the very successful program of the Bayside Yankees and has a long history of instructing both group and individual lessons.
